I The trust he serves

Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal began in 1934, when it took over the Rashtriya Shala — a school founded in 1921 in the wake of the Swadeshi movement and the wider independence struggle. From a single school serving the Vile Parle area of Mumbai, the trust grew into a network of more than forty schools and colleges in that suburb alone, and then outward to Bangalore, Hyderabad, Indore, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Navi Mumbai, Dhule and Shirpur. Its institutions include Mithibai College, Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics, Dwarkadas J. Sanghvi College of Engineering, Bhagubhai Mafatlal Polytechnic and, since 1981, the institution now known as SVKM’s NMIMS, which was granted deemed-to-be-university status in 2003. Across all of them the trust teaches more than thirty-five thousand students.

Within that structure — a Managing Committee of thirty members and nine trustees, described by SVKM as the supreme body for all decisions including financial ones — Bhupesh R. Patel serves as Honorary Joint President and Trustee. The designation appears consistently across the official pages of SVKM’s constituent institutions and in the trust’s own record of elected members.

His recorded responsibility inside the trust is the physical estate. SVKM institutions describe him as actively involved in the development of infrastructure and facilities at all campuses across India: the buildings, laboratories, hostels, workshops and grounds on which teaching and research depend. It is unglamorous work, and it is the constraint that most often determines what an institution can actually offer.

II The society he directs

Alongside SVKM he is Managing Director of the Shirpur Education Society, a trust established in 1979 which states its purpose as promoting holistic development through a value-based learning environment supported by modern infrastructure, innovative teaching practice and a transparent working culture. The society runs pre-primary, primary and secondary schools, junior colleges, and a group of professional institutions in Shirpur: the R. C. Patel Institute of Technology, the R. C. Patel and H. R. Patel institutes of pharmaceutical education and research, a polytechnic and a college of education.

He appears on the governing body of the R. C. Patel Institute of Technology in the management category, listed there in his capacity as Managing Director of the society, and is named among the institute’s patrons. He is additionally a trustee of the R. C. Patel Educational Trust, which supports institutions offering engineering, arts, commerce, computer applications, pharmacy and teacher-education programmes together with a number of schools.

III Building in Shirpur

The clearest thread in the record is a sustained effort to place metropolitan-standard institutions in a small town. Shirpur is a municipal town in Dhule district, in the north-west corner of Maharashtra, several hundred kilometres from Mumbai. He is described as having envisioned establishing a series of SVKM institutions there: the NMIMS residential campus at Mukesh Patel Technology Park for engineering and pharmaceutical programmes, the NMIMS Academy of Aviation, SVKM’s Mukesh Patel Military School, and SVKM’s Mukesh Patel CBSE School.

He was instrumental in developing the residential campus itself — fifty acres carrying roughly ten lakh square feet of built-up area — and continues to take an active interest in what happens on it. The aviation academy operates from the airstrip at Shirpur; the military school, a residential institution, was inaugurated in 2003 to prepare boys and girls for the defence services.

The point is not the acreage. It is that a student from Dhule, Nandurbar or Jalgaon can read for an engineering, pharmacy or aviation qualification, or sit a CBSE board examination, without first having to leave the district.

IV The co-operative enterprise

For more than a decade he was Chairman of Priyadarshini Sahakari Soot Girani Ltd., Shirpur — a spinning and dyeing unit operating in the co-operative sector, employing more than three thousand people and described as the largest co-operative initiative in Maharashtra.

A co-operative of that size is a particular kind of management problem. It carries an industrial obligation — machinery, working capital, quality, markets — and simultaneously a social one, because its members are also its constituents. Running it for over a decade in a district with limited industrial employment is a substantial part of the record, and it sits naturally beside the educational work: both are attempts to make a rural taluka economically self-sufficient rather than a place people leave.

V Public office

He served three terms as President of the Shirpur–Warvade Nagar Palika — the municipal council for Shirpur town — from 2001 to 2006, again from 2009 to 2011, and from 2014 to 2016.

The projects recorded from those terms are the ordinary, decisive infrastructure of a functioning town: schools for tribal children, the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, public recreation facilities, water treatment, sewerage systems, electrification and roads. The council was recognised by the Government of Maharashtra as the best-managed Nagar Parishad in the state, becoming the first recipient of an award of ₹40 lakh.

VI A hospital for the region

In April 2026 the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Devendra Fadnavis, inaugurated SVKM’s Tapanbhai Mukeshbhai Patel Memorial Hospital & Research Centre at Shirpur: 1,200 beds across approximately seven lakh square feet in its first phase. The facility is intended to bring advanced medical care of the kind ordinarily available only in Mumbai or Delhi within reach of underserved and tribal populations across Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon and Nashik.

Reporting on the project credits the initiative to the leadership of Shri Amrish Patel, President of SVKM, together with Bhupesh Patel, whose vision is described as having been key to bringing the project to life.
